The Rise of Game Audio Schools

For those interested in making video games, it's never been a better time. Schools now teach what was once impossible learn, like game audio. The rise of game audio schools help the aspiring sound engineer, composer and sound designer learn programming and the more technical side of game development. One can learn the skills necessary to land a lucrative job in the industry.

Todays game company requires more than just basic audio production knowledge. There are game audio middleware programs to learn as well as advanced techniques which change often. The best game audio schools are often small and can adapt to the ever changing world of interactive entertainment. From FMOD to Wwise, students can learn the core toolset needed for a career in game audio. Many of these programs are connected to game companies and can provide a faster employment rate.

Traditional colleges are unable to keep up with the changes in this field, so most game audio schools are small and tightly focused on the essentials. Your average AAA hit game takes around three years and a team of 300 people to complete, so it makes sense that audio is important. Working with such a large team can have perks like friendship and being part of a hugely successful project. Audio is a key component in these hit games and includes music, sound and dialogue. It's not about just making these things, but getting them to play seamlessly in the game.

Many students start with traditional audio production skills and this is often a prerequisite. Learning the basics on their own can prepare them for greatness. Pro Tools, Cubase and Logic are the DAWs of choice, but some will use Reaper, Ableton and others depending on features needed. Get comfortable with your workflow and master one of these, if not several.

Companies like EA, Blizzard and others are in constant need of game audio professionals. They seek competent workers who strive for excellence. In other words, making some beats isn't enough. Students must master several disciplines at once and push forward into new territory.
